Loving Children Like Jesus Did

ABC NEWS - July, 2010
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
Genesis 1: 1
Welcome to our 48th year! Whether you are returning to a new class or beginning a new journey of development with your child, we are glad you are here. The children will settle into a routine and learn quickly they are in a place where people love and care about them.
There are a few issues I would like to cover just because it is the beginning of the school year. Please be careful in our parking lot. Go slow when entering and exiting. If you are in a hurry to leave after you drop your child off, you might consider parking at the other end of the church so you can exit onto the street more quickly.
Be very cautious about leaving valuables in your car, including other siblings, unattended while you run into school. We keep a secure building through the school day. Doors are locked at 9:00 and unlocked at time of pick-up. We want a safe and secure environment surrounding every aspect of your child’s time in this program. Dismissal is 11:45 a.m. for Preschool and 12:00 Noon for Kindergarten.
You will receive a newsletter every month along with your child’s individual class calendar. Please glance at the school bulletin board in the hall for information and articles of interest. Scholastic Book Order Forms will be attached to the monthly newsletters. If you would like to order, please turn your order form and check made payable to Scholastic to the office by September 15.
Additional Opportunity sessions begin after Labor Day, on Tuesday September 7. Please send a sack lunch and drink with your child. The fee is to be paid with your tuition at the beginning of the month. Pick-up is promptly at 2:00pm.
Please make sure we have current information, especially your phone number. We need to be able to reach someone at anytime during the time your child is here.
Also, remember that we collect Box Tops for Education. If you are not saving for another school, we would appreciate you saving for us.
Rev. Ed Koffenberger is the Pastor of Suburban Christian Church. He would like to invite you to any of the programs that the church offers. Rev. Koffenberger is also a Marriage & Family Counselor and is available to provide assistance.
Again, thank you for allowing us the privilege of serving your family at this important time. Please discuss any concerns or issues with me at any time.
In Christ,
Linda Cornwell, Director
**It is very important that you remember to sign your child in and out each day they are here.
Additonal Opportunity Classes:
If you are signed up for Additional Opportunity Classes, please remember your child needs to bring their lunch to school and should be picked up at 2:00 p.m. The cost for the Additional Opportunity classes is $10.00 per session, payable monthly, at the beginning of each month. A separate rate schedule will be provided and you are welcome to include the payment with your regular tuition payment. Just stop by the office for more information.

The typical daily schedule includes participation in group singing, rhythmic exercises, a Bible story, creative activities and/or structured room activity, Show and Tell, outdoor play, when possible, and a snack.
WHICH CLASS
The age of your child on October 1, 2010 determines which class (3 or 4 year old Preschool or 5 year old Kindergarten), that he or she should attend.
SAFETY
The school constantly emphasizes safety, but does maintain an Insurance Program which includes supplemental medical coverage. No ropes, knives, guns, or sharp or dangerous objects may be brought to school.
Fire and Disaster Drills are held each month.

CURRICULUM
The Suburban Christian Church KINDERGARTEN FOR FIVE YEAR OLDS is fully accredited by the State of Kentucky. The KINDERGARTEN class offers a complete Reading Readiness Program in preparation for Primary School and students begin reading basic sight words. Kindergarten classes meet from 8:45 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Noon, Monday through Friday, late-August through mid-May.
Students learn to work independently and in small groups. In the areas of Math and Science, the children are introduced to numbers through 100 and the sets for these. Beginning addition and subtraction are introduced, using manipulative materials so that these concepts are understood. Other units within the Math program include the telling of time (hour and half-hour units), recognition of coins and their value, shapes, categorizing, positioning (top/bottom, between, etc.), and counting by ones, twos, fives and tens to 100.
Science units are also used a means of enhancing our phonics-based Reading Program. Several units that are taught are Weather, Plants, Foods, and other special areas of interest to the children. Field trips, both in-house and outside the school, are taken during the year.
Much emphasis is placed on instilling the love of learning, the joy of accomplishment, and a feeling of great self-worth within each child.
The goal of the FOUR YEAR OLD PRESCHOOL PROGRAM is to develop social and organizational skills, and to build self-confidence. We assist the children in developing a sense of order (calendar and events), personal pride, respect for others, fine motor skills, courtesy and confidence. In order to achieve this, our curriculum offers Language, Numbers, Science and Social Studies units. Your child will partake in rhythm and music; circle time; calendar and events; weather and the seasons; numbers and counting; playtime and creative hands-on activities that are practical and developmentally appropriate. Children will learn the alphabet, phonics, numbers one through twenty, counting by ones, fives and tens to 100, colors and shapes. Classes meet from 8:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Options of 3, 4 and 5 day classes are available.
In the THREE YEAR OLD CLASS, we strive to ease the transition from home to school by helping the children develop socially and emotionally. They will learn to interact appropriately other children and teachers. We encourage imagination and a healthy self-esteem, as well as provide for art projects to aid in the development of small motor skills. Included in the learning activities is the recognition and formation of letters, numbers, colors and shapes.
During the day, the classes will participate with the entire school in group singing, rhythmic exercises, and a Bible story. There will be a morning snack and playtime outside (weather permitting) or in the church gym. The classroom time will be a combination of free play in various centers and a structured story and calendar time to help teach the children how to sit quietly. The children are also encouraged to have a daily job to help keep the classroom in order.
Classes meet from 8:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. late-August through mid-May.
3 day classes meet Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday.
4 day classes meet Tuesday - Friday.
The 3 year old program is for children 3 years of age on or before October 1, 2010. Children must be toilet trained prior to entrance in school. (Pull-up diapers are not acceptable wear.)
OTHER PRESCHOOL INFORMATION
A MEETING FOR PARENTS is held at the beginning of the school year in order to provide general information regarding school and parental responsibilities during the school year.

THE BUILDING AND GROUNDS—All classes are located in a fireproof building with large windows. There are four acres of beautiful grounds. The outdoor play area is equipped with recreational equipment, which is 200 feet from the street and completely fenced.
OPEN HOUSES are held with the teacher, child and parent before school begins to acquaint the child with the classroom and the teacher. Conferences with parents are also held during the school year for the Kindergarten students and our 4/5 year old students entering Kindergarten in the Fall.
Children may bring items for Show and Tell on specified days. This should normally be limited to one item. The school cannot be responsible for fragile objects. Pets may be brought, with permission from the teacher, at the beginning of the morning for a few minutes then taken home.
